Purpose: The Assitant Superintendent of Instruction assists the Superintendent in coordinating and supervising the effective operation of the school district. This is accomplished by working closely with the staff, administration, board of education, and community to provide a comprehensive quality instructional program.

 

Responsible to: Superintendent and board of education.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
  2. Three years of successful administrative experience.
  3. Current knowledge of the Virginia Department of Educations Standards of Learning.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of instructional strategies and teaching methodologies.

           

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating the effective operation of the school district.
  2. Establish an optimal learning environment within the school district as well as fostering professional growth and building staff morale throughout the district.
  3. Plan, implement and manage the curriculum, instruction, and programs for the district leading to improved student achievement.
  4. Facilitate and maintain the district-wide School Improvement Process that meets and exceeds Advanced accreditation standards.
  5. Ensure articulation of the educational program within and among grade levels.
  6. Lead and serve as consultant to principals and other staff on matters regarding curriculum development and instruction and staff development throughout the district.
  7. Direct the process of curriculum change and innovation throughout the district.
  8. Serve as the director of curriculum projects funded through federal or state agencies or by foundation aid.
  9. Lead, direct, and coordinate central office instructional personnel.
  10. Develop, organize, and supervise applicable district in-service educationprograms.
  11. Coordinate the district’s summer school program.
  12. Provide leadership in evaluating the performance of schools.
  13. Responsible for the design and evaluation of the district’s testing program.
  14. Assist the Superintendent, Director of Operations, Director of Special Education, and the Director of Finance in the preparation of the annual district budget, in particular that portion of the budget dealing with system-wide instructional services, materials and equipment.
  15. Recommend staffing patterns, develop plans for instructional staffing and participate in the decision-making process concerning standards for the selection of new professional staff members.
  16. Make recommendations to the Superintendent regarding the renewal of teacher contracts.
  17. Serve on leadership committees as assigned by the Superintendent.
  18. Provide leadership to and coordinate curriculum study activities.
  19. Develop and implement competency-based criteria and standards for evaluation of the instructional program.
  20. Direct the continual development and improvement of curriculum guides, course syllabus and resource units.
  21. Complete federal, state and/or local reports as directed by the Superintendent.
  22. Attend professional meetings, conferences, institutes etc. to keep abreast of current trends and practices in curriculum content and instructional methods.
  23. Coordinate research carried on in the schools by the district’s employees,  individuals, or groups from outside the staff.
  24. Maintain contact and consult with state, regional and local agencies that affect the curricular/instructional programs of the district.
  25. Coordinate and monitor staff development and in-service activities for the education staff.
  26. Facilitate incorporating required instructional programs in the district’s curriculum.
  27. Interpret instructional services to the public by way of the news media, community organizations, civic groups and governmental agencies.
  28. Advise the Superintendent on matters pertaining to maintaining and continuouslyimproving the curricular and instructional programs in grades kindergarten through 12.
  29. Perform other related duties as directed by the Superintendent or Board.
